Sri Lanka Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe Says He Will Resign Amid Protests


Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe stated he would resign after simply two months in workplace after protesters stormed and occupied the president’s residence and workplace amid public anger over the country’s deepening sovereign debt crisis.

The resignation of Mr. Wickremesinghe, a political veteran serving his sixth stint as prime minister, comes after an emergency assembly of the nation’s political occasion leaders to nominate an interim, all-party authorities. His resignation, he stated on Twitter, would assist “ensure the continuation of the government including the safety of all citizens.”
