France’s Macron Lost Grip on Parliament Amid Russian Squeeze on Energy Prices

PARIS—The lack of French President Emmanuel Macron’s parliamentary majority is an early signal of how Russia’s squeeze on European power costs is elevating the financial and political stakes for European leaders as the invasion of Ukraine turns into a conflict of attrition.

Mr. Macron’s occasion misplaced dozens of seats within the National Assembly to candidates backed by far-left firebrand Jean-Luc Melenchon and far-right chief Marine Le Pen. Both politicians seized on record-level inflation to painting Mr. Macron as a pacesetter who paid extra consideration to his position on the diplomatic stage, coping with the conflict in Ukraine, than to voters struggling to make ends meet.
