For Gun Violence Researchers, Bipartisan Bill Is a ‘Glass Half Full’

Dr. Rosenberg argued that gun violence prevention and gun rights should not at odds with one another. It is feasible, he stated, to give you insurance policies that shield each the rights of gun homeowners and public well being. Dr. Swanson believes pink flag legal guidelines are simply such a coverage. The push for them has been 10 years within the making.

In January 2013, simply weeks after a gunman killed 26 individuals at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, Daniel Webster, a pioneer within the subject of gun violence analysis, convened a two-day summit on reducing gun violence.

Along with Mr. Horwitz, Dr. Webster directs Hopkins’ Center for Gun Violence Solutions. Mr. Horwitz runs advocacy, whereas Dr. Webster oversees educational analysis. The aim of the summit, Dr. Webster stated, was to place collectively evidence-based “recommendations for what policymakers should be doing to address gun violence in America,” and publish it rapidly, to affect congressional negotiations.

But the ensuing e book — together with chapters by Dr. Swanson and Dr. Wintemute — failed to maneuver members of Congress, who handed no new legal guidelines.

Two months later, Mr. Horwitz convened a research consortium, he stated, “to really think through how to deal with this issue of firearms, mass shootings, suicide, without stigmatizing people with mental illness.”

Soon, Dr. Swanson, Mr. Horwitz and others within the consortium started touring the nation, selling evidence-based insurance policies, together with pink flag legal guidelines, to state legislators. In 2014, California grew to become the primary state since Indiana to undertake a pink flag legislation. Today, 19 states and the District of Columbia have them.
